While market swings can be unsettling, they are also a normal part of long-term investing. We continue to encourage clients to avoid making major allocation changes during sharp sell-offs. It’s worth remembering that some of the strongest days in the market have historically followed some of the most difficult. For example:

• 2008 Financial Crisis: After a period of steep declines, the S&P 500 jumped 11.58% on October 13, 2008, one of its best days ever.
• COVID-19 Crash: In March 2020, after a significant drop, the market rebounded with a 9.38% gain on March 24.
• Great Depression Era: Even during extreme downturns, many of the largest single-day gains occurred soon after major market lows.

What makes the current environment somewhat unique is that the source of the volatility is more policy-related than economic in nature. While the details are still unfolding, there’s reason to believe that solutions remain possible, which adds a layer of hope and opportunity that hasn’t always been present in past downturns.

We may not be able to predict the next headline, but we do know this: over time, markets have rewarded patience and discipline. Remaining focused on your long-term plan and staying invested through periods of uncertainty has historically led to strong outcomes.
